Animal Pest Control
ENVIRONMENTAL
Animal pest control plays a critical role in the protection of biodiversity and native plants.
To reduce the risk to birdlife from pests, and thanks to funding from the Ministry for the Environment, the Pōrangahau Catchment Group has a network of 200 traps in place across approximately 1,500 hectares at the Pōrangahau estuary. The idea for the project was sparked in response to a discussion on Facebook about an increase in the presence of pests at Pōrangahau village.
WHY DO WE DO THIS?
Pōrangahau estuary is a tidal lagoon with significant ecology, as well as cultural and spiritual values. In addition to the critically-endanged matuku-hūrepo (Australasian bittern), we are also fortunate to have other taonga (valued treasure) bird species living at the estuary: pohowera/tūturiwhatu (banded dotterel, kuaka (the bar-tailed godwit) and kōtuku ngutupapa (royal spoonbill).
